DSAI Summer School 2024: Decolonising Research and Development

We were delighted to host, along with TUS Thurles and EADI, The DSAI Summer School 2024, themed "Reflecting on Decolonising Research and Development through an Indigenous and Feminist Critical Lens," at the end of May . The first day was conducted online, while the second day took place in-person at the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) in Thurles, Ireland.

Key Highlights

Day 1: Online (May 30)

  • Opening ritual by Mawie Barrett, followed by a keynote address by Sharanya Nayak.
  • Sessions on research methods, gender perspectives, and Indigenous voices in development discourse.
  • Group discussions and recaps.

Day 2: In-person (May 31)

  • Welcome address by Maura Clancy, Dean, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology, TUS.
  • Sessions on governance practices and Indigenous knowledge systems.
  • Parallel workshops, including a tour of the Rock of Cashel, image theatre, poetry as research, and community engagement.

Of the summer school attendees said the following:

"The first day set the tone of the summer school, the lectures enabled people to engage and have conversation during day two. It was insightful on how as researchers or as development workers we have been extractive to indigenous people or minority ethnic group"

'I hope all is well. I wanted to say a huge thank you to DSAI for hosting the summer school last week – I got so much out of it and really enjoyed it.'

'Thank you for organising such a thought provoking and engaging conference last week. I appreciate the amount of work that must have gone into organising it, please do let me know if there is anything I can assist with when coming to UCC.'

If you attended the summer school and would like to give your own feedback, you can do so by filling out this form.
