Transformative Change? The Role of Evidence-Based Research and Impact in Global Development

The Development Studies Association Ireland (DSA Ireland) is pleased to announce the call for abstracts/papers for our annual conference, to take place on 19-20 November 2015.
As we move into the post-MDG era, we need to critically examine the extent to which the new post-2015 agenda is adequate in terms of achieving transformative change. A particular challenge will be how we measure impact – and the role of evidence-based policy and practice – in the global development agenda now being shaped.
The DSA Ireland Annual Conference 2015 will look to address the following questions amongst others:
- What lessons can we learn from existing impact assessments of development and humanitarian action interventions?
- What is the role of evidence-based policy and practice in development aid?
- What does ‘transformative change’ mean and how might it be achieved?
- Is an emphasis on ‘what works’ limiting more creative development solutions?
- How can the ending of global poverty be achieved with the active participation of those most affected by global poverty?
- What can we learn from the MDG-era to inform the post–2015 development agenda?
We are calling for abstracts/papers from postgraduate students,researchers and practitioners addressing these and related topics. In particular, we would encourage abstracts/papers addressing those issues in the context of the themes which are the focus of the DSA Ireland Study groups, namely:
- Civil Society and development
- Gender and development
- Education and development
- Health and development
- Humanitarian Action
- Nutrition and development
- Water, Environment and development
Abstracts and proposals for papers are invited on any of these themes or combination of themes, related to international development.
Submissions may take the form of research findings, evaluations of programmes and projects, lessons from the field, or other forms of systematic learning on development issues. Submissions are most welcome from both researchers based in institutions of higher education and/or other research institutes and development practitioners working in the sector.
The conference will include plenary sessions with panels of invited international and national speakers. Abstracts will be considered for oral presentations, as part of conference panels.
Abstracts must not exceed 300 words and should conform to guidelines. Please view abstract guidelines here. All abstracts need to be submitted by e-mail to: admin@dsaireland.org by 30 October 2015.
Authors will be informed of the outcome of the selection process by 4 November 2015. If selected for presentation, authors will be invited to submit their presentation/full paper no later than 9 November 2015. Please view the guidelines for final paper submission here.
All papers submitted by the ‘Call for Papers’ deadline, will be considered for ‘The Robert Chambers Award’, which was launched at the DSA Ireland Annual Conference 2014. This award will be given to the most innovative paper presented at the annual DSA Ireland Conference 2015 that has the potential to make a significant contribution to strengthening the empowerment of the world’s poor to achieve just and sustainable development. There will also be a 'Best Student Paper Award`, which will be given on the basis of a written paper (minimum 3000 words) and the presentation of a paper by a post-graduate student at the DSA Ireland annual conference. This prize will be to the value of €300 and additionally two faculty members, drawn from the DSA Ireland membership or steering committee, will work with the student to develop the paper for publication/further dissemination.
