This one day workshop for practitioners was organised by DSA Ireland in collaboration with Trinity International Development Initiative (TIDI).
The aim of the workshop was to hold a refresher course for practitioners on research methods applied in results based management of development and humanitarian programmes. The workshop suited in particular to practitioners working with Irish Aid funded results frameworks. The workshop covered the setting of objective and outcome indicators and targets across various sectors (health, wash, livelihoods, etc.) on an annual and five year period. In this context, the workshop considered issues such as:
- Phases of Research: From conceptualization, to managing the research, to completion and use of findings.
- What constitutes an objective, outcome and output?
- How can baselines be set; what sources of information can be used?
- Establishing a sample and sampling frames, including software to do same. Sampling in challenging contexts (e.g. with migratory populations), ensuring appropriate representation of vulnerable groups (e.g. a big enough sample)
- Target setting to results (what sources, in addition to agency’s own might guide this -WHO standards, Sphere standards, etc) and how to make informed decisions on same?
- Methods for measurement of results at year one, mid-term, and end line (qualitative and quantitative). Setting up measurements for evaluation at design stage
The objective was to provide an overall sense of practical research methods which are applicable to results based management, as well as a platform for input and discussion among practitioners.
