The Gender Study Group of the Development Studies Association of Ireland and the Trinity International Development Initiative (TIDI) hosted the seminar "Gender, Violence and Conflict" to mark International Women's Day 2016.
The role of gender and gender-based violence in contexts of conflict and instability is often examined in a limited way, for instance only in relation to sexual violence perpetrated by armed forces or the impact of the forced migration of women and children. Yet, the role of gender is significantly more complex, and more important, in understanding causes and consequences of conflict and in transitions to peace. In this seminar we brought together researchers working on issues of gender and conflict in varied development contexts, from Northern Ireland to Kenya to Mexico. The seminar examined issues including, the impact of conflict on intimate partner violence and violence by non-combatants, the role of violent masculinities in shaping conflicts and instability, and gender identities and dynamics within peace-building and post-conflict development.
