Global Development as Relationship: Dependence, Interdependence or Divide?

Background
The Development Studies Association Conference in 2015 takes as its theme the forms of relationship that are valued, enacted and denied through current processes of international development. Ebola, political violence, migration, trade and climate change all assert our global interdependence, while structures of governance still tend to assume the predominance of nation state sovereignty. Contemporary growth processes have generated prosperity for many, great wealth for some and exceptional inequality. Their neo-liberal thrust valorises independence and generates increasing populations whose labour appears either surplus or highly insecure, and so rely on forms of social dependence to secure a basic livelihood. Alongside these non-inclusive growth processes new communication technologies have become an important means through which relationships are enacted, reconfiguring notions of nationality, community, neighbourhood, family and personal identity.

Registration is now open, with the early-bird deadline expiring on July 9th 2015. This is also the date by which all presenters should register.
To attend the conference, participants must be members of the DSA at the time of the Conference. Individual membership is £60 per year. Concessionary membership is £30 per year.

Exbitions at DSA UK Annual Conference
A range of publishers and organisations will be exhibiting during the DSA conference 2015. These include: Institute of Development Studies (IDS), Oxfam, Oxford University Press, Palgrave MacMillan, Practical Action Publishing, Queen Elizabeth House, Routledge/Taylor and Francis, and Wiley Blackwell.
Journal of International Development Special Issue
Each year we aim to publish some of the papers for the Conference in the Journal of International Development. Those wishing their papers to be considered for publication in this Conference Special Edition should send FULL PAPERS by Monday 17th August 2015. Minor amendments will be possible after the Conference to reflect discussion.
- Individual papers will be eligible for publication in a Special Edition of the Journal of International Development.
- In some cases, a panel convenor and contributors may wish to write a joint thematic review paper following the conference, for consideration in the Special Issue of JID
- In addition, certain panel topics may be suitable for groups of papers to be published as ‘Policy Fora' in JID or other journals.
- The word limit and format will be as per JID (max 8000 words, 100 word abstract); further details here.
